Albuquerque New Mexico
Albuquerque, New Mexico's Sandia Peak Tramway is the world's longest
aerial tramway, 2.7-mile glass ride dangling from a cable. At the top
you can ride bikes, hike, ski, camp, and eat at the restaurant looking
out across 11,000 square mile panoramic view. This is a breathtaking experience.
If you are within 500 miles of this place take a day or two and visit.
Tram ride is $15. The 45-minute round trip ski lift ride is definitely
worth it at $5 additional. The Sandia Crest Scenic Byway is 13.6 miles
long and takes about two hours to travel. It is now part of the Turquoise
Trail National Scenic Byway. Highlights of the drive are Tinkertown, Sandia
Peak Ski Area, Capulin Snowplay Area, Doc Long Picnic Area, Sandia Man
Cave, Cibola National Forest, Sandia Crest, Sandia Peak Tramway.
The Sandia Mountains are the predominant geographic feature in Albuquerque.
"Sandía" is Spanish for "watermelon" and it
is believed to be a reference to the brilliant coloration of the mountains
at sunset: bright pink and green. The pink is due to large exposures of
granodiorite cliffs, and the green is due to large swaths of conifer forests.
Albuquerque contains a variety of shops, museums, and other points of
interest including the Albuquerque Biological Park and Old Town Albuquerque.
Albuquerque has the largest hot air balloon gathering in the world. The
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is held during early October.
It started in 1972 with 13 balloons and in the year 2000 there were a
record 1000 balloons that lifted off in a mass ascension. This event is
the most photographed event in the world.
Travel info - There is RV parking at the Sandia Peak Tramway parking
lot. Motorhomes can park free at the huge
casino within a couple miles of the Tram. This helps keep the cost of
the rv vacation down - Albuquerque New Mexico.
