camper awnings are a must have for either full timers or weekend warriors

Camper Awnings

Camper awnings are a necessity if you want to enjoy your trips and vacations. Awnings are one of the most used accessory for any camper or recreational vehicle. You can opt for just an awning or a camper awning with a screen room which extends your living space. They also provide shade on both the inside and outside of your camper which is especially needed in the summer. Whether you are looking at new or used campers, an awning should be the first accessory you add on. If you don't have the extra money to spend on a camper awning then you probably shouldn't buy one.

Over the course of 10 years and over 33,000 miles of traveling as well as living full time in our RV, our experience is that awnings are the single most important exterior option you will ever purchase and use. I cannot recommend strongly

enough that buying an rv with an awning already installed or having one installed after your purchase is an opportunity you do not want to pass up. Our first RV didn't have any awnings but I only made that mistake once, because since then all my motorhomes have had them. It might sound excessive but every window should have an awning along with the large one at the entrance to the RV which will be your patio.

One of the biggest reasons for a camper awning is the sun. For the most part we travel and stay in hot climates like southern California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Camper awnings offer you the ability to leave your windows open while you play or cook outside. While camping or at any sporting event, awnings allow you to socialize and meet new people without them entering your camper which has all of your personal belongings. Awnings offer you the protection from rain coming in through your open windows too. One of my favorite uses for window awnings is that it allows me to keep the bedroom windows open at night without running the air conditioning. Most people underestimate the value in an open window. Camper awnings allow you to dry camp or boondock without paying campground fees or running a loud smelly generator.

Most campers don't have adequate insulation from heat and cold and although air conditioning systems are usually quite good, it still pays dollar for dollar to invest in a good exterior awning system. The most important issue in keeping your camper cool is stopping the sun's heat BEFORE it gets to the windows and exterior walls.

I cannot tell you how many times I have seen awning installations done wrong. Many after market companies just screw the braces wherever they seem to go best, right into the skin and exterior finish of the recreational vehicle. When an installation is done wrong the awnings can literally rip the side wall right off. This most often happens during high winds and the stress it puts on the camper from the awnings hardware and canvas weight. In retrofit situations, the dealer has to locate, through the exterior walls, the upright supports that will properly support the bolts to secure the awning system to your camper. If you don't have awnings, invest in them immediately but hire a professional dealer to install it.

The operation of a manual camper awning fitted over a window takes just seconds to open and close. The large awnings can take one person about 3 minutes to open or shut. High quality awning fabrics can last as long as 13 years in all weather conditions with very little care. Camper awnings are easy to operate and for what you get out of them they are relatively inexpensive. They make all kinds of camping much more fun because they protect you from the weather which is the single biggest issue being out in the elements without camper awnings.
