Ghost Story
I left Julian cleaning the pool, moved the rv, and walked back to Julian
and Myra's house where we were staying for a few days. I walked in the
front door, shut and locked it behind me, left my shoes just inside, and
yelled jokingly, "Honey, I'm Home!" As I walked through the
living room and glanced upstairs to the second floor and then back to
the kitchen I got a strange feeling. I walked into the kitchen and yelled
again "Honey, I'm home!". No answer. I guessed Kelly, my wife,
and Myra had walked down to the basement to tend to our bunny Bugsy. As
I turned to go back into the living room a strange warmth came over me,
I began to sweat almost immediately and my heart began to race. I felt
distant and dream like. Nothing made sense. My mind raced and I thought;
where are they? What is going on? I was scared and could not identify
why. I felt like a ghost was watching me. Then I saw it. An aquarium filled
with small fish that were swimming frantically around and around. I saw
things thrown on the floor that I didn't remember being there. I felt
something watching me. I turned the corner on my way back to the front
door (they have a HUGE house) and the hair on the back of my neck stood
up, my hands began to shake, adrenaline shot through me and then I saw
it. A cold black cat frozen stiffly mid-launch in the armchair by the
door. His eyes were brilliant yellow, completely dilated and wide open
as if by a really bad taxidermist. He was as terrified as I was. It was
in that instant that I realized Myra and Julian did not have a cat. They
did not have an a aquarium. I was not in Julian and Myra's house. I SLOWLY
passed the cat, then lurched forward, fumbled with the lock, opened the
door, was halfway through it and reached back to grab my shoes. I stumbled
down the walkway and onto the sidewalk, threw my shoes on and RAN next
door to Julian and Myra's house. I begged Myra not to accept any phone
calls, in case the neighbor called the police. Myra laughed so hard she
almost dunked her head in her blueberries and milk. Kelly and Julian laughed
too as I told the story to all of them. Then I got to the part where I
thought "hmmmmm, what if there had been a big dog in that house,
or someone undressed, or a big man with a gun. I could have been eaten
or shot. Funny, ghost story? |
