RV awning - buying an rv awning is the most important exterior option you will make

RV Awning

RV awning is one of the most utilized accessories on an RV. Not only does it extend your living space it also provides shade on the outside and inside which is especially helpful during the summer months. An RV awning should be the first accessory added on to your new or used motorhome, trailer or fifth wheel. If you don't have the time or money to have an awning added to your rv then I don't suggest buying an rv at all. We have traveled over 33,000 miles in 10 years of rving and lived in our motorhome full time, or camped out of it for more than 1,912 days.

During this time it is our experience that awnings are the single most important exterior option you will purchase. I strongly recommend buying an rv with them already installed as they are MUCH more difficult and expensive to ADD later than nearly any other option. But do not pass up the opportunity to add an rv awning. They are well worth the time and money.

Most motorhomes don't have adequate insulation. Although air conditioning systems are usually quite good, it still pays dollar for dollar to invest in a good exterior awning system. The most important issue in keeping your motorhome cool is stopping the sun and heat BEFORE it gets to the windows, the glass, and exterior walls of your coach.

My first rv, a Class C, did not have any awnings but since then all my motorhomes have had them. Every window should have an awning along with the large one situated over the main entrance to the RV for the patio. The sun is one of the biggest reasons for awnings. We travel and stay in hot climates like southern California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Awnings offer you the ability to leave your windows open while you play outside. You can leave the windows of your RV open without worrying that much about rain coming in the windows should it pour down while your away. Most people underestimate the value in an open window. It is REALLY nice to be able to leave your bedroom windows open at night while you sleep in places where it is cool enough without the ac running. An rv awning allows you to boondock or dry camp without paying campground fees or running a loud smelly generator.

For manual rv awnings fitted over a window takes just seconds to open or close. The big patio size awning takes one person about 3 minutes to open or shut. High quality awning fabrics will last between 10 to 14 years in the weather with very little care. Rv awnings are easy to operate and for what you get out of them relatively inexpensive. They make all camping much more fun because they protect you from the weather which is the single biggest enemy of rv construction and longevity outside of mechanical failure.

Many after market companies just screw the braces wherever they seem to go best, right into the skin and exterior finish of the motorhome. When installation is done wrong the awnings literally rip the side wall right off the rv. This happens due to the stress from winds and the weight of the awning. More than nearly any other option, an Rv awning is much more difficult and expensive to add later. In retrofit situations, the dealer has to locate, through the exterior walls, the upright supports that will properly support the bolts to secure the awning system to your rv. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen this done wrong. If you don't have awnings, invest in them immediately. Hire a professional dealer to install your rv awning.
